How to Spot Outdated Google Ads Advice Before It Wastes Your Time

Outdated Google Ads advice can send you through hours of unnecessary setup before you discover that your store could have handled the task differently.

I made this mistake with Google Merchant Center. I followed an older tutorial, created a custom spreadsheet and manually entered product variations. My lesson is simple: validate the advice before you build anything.

Quick Answer: How Do You Spot Outdated Google Ads Advice?

Check the publication date, platform, feed tool and source credibility before following any Google Ads or Merchant Center tutorial. Then compare its manual steps with the automated feed options available for your store. Automated or multifeed setups can reduce data entry, but the right method and setup time depend on your platform, tool and current Merchant Center requirements.

Checks to Make Before Following a Merchant Center Tutorial

What to check Why it matters Verification question
Publication date Merchant Center workflows and tools can change Does the tutorial reflect the options shown in your account?
Store platform Feed methods differ between ecommerce platforms Was the tutorial made for your platform and setup?
Manual data entry An automated feed may reduce repetitive work Can your store or feed tool sync this product data?
Source credibility Unverified advice can send beginners down the wrong path Does the source explain why this method fits the use case?

The Merchant Center Spreadsheet Mistake That Wasted Hours

A Google Merchant Center product feed is a structured source of product details that Merchant Center uses to understand and display your store’s inventory.

When I was starting with Google Ads, an older video told me to create a custom spreadsheet containing every variation of my products. I followed those instructions and wasted hours, maybe even days, listing the information manually.

For my use case, an automated or multifeed process could have handled the job much faster. The real problem wasn’t that I was unwilling to do the work. I was learning from the wrong people and applying instructions without checking whether the method was still relevant.

That’s why it helps to understand how to learn Google Ads more effectively, including how to check the quality and context of the information instead of following every step on screen.

How to Check Outdated Google Ads Advice Before Using It

Start with the date, but don’t stop there. A recent tutorial can still be wrong for your store, while an older explanation may contain a useful principle even if its interface path has changed.

Check whether the tutorial uses your ecommerce platform, your type of product catalogue and a feed method available to you. Then open your own accounts and compare what you see with the instructions.

Next, judge the source. Does the person explain why the method fits the store, or do they simply prescribe a long sequence of clicks? Useful guidance should explain the decision so you can reassess it when the interface or available tools change.

My warning: Don’t start building a manual product feed just because a tutorial tells you to. First check whether your store, ecommerce platform or feed tool offers a current automated method.

Manual Spreadsheet or Automated Feed: What Should You Verify?

An automated product feed syncs product data from an ecommerce platform or feed app instead of requiring you to enter every item manually. It can reduce repetitive work, but that doesn’t make manual spreadsheets universally wrong.

The right method depends on your platform, feed tool, catalogue and current Merchant Center requirements. Product data still needs to follow the relevant formatting rules described in the Merchant Center product data specification.

If you use Shopify, the platform can connect with Merchant Center through its Google and YouTube channel setup. Check the process shown in your account alongside Shopify’s official setup guidance before relying on an old video.

A separate feed app may also fit your setup. You can review how to add Shopify products with Multifeeds, but check the available options inside your own store and Merchant Center account.

What to Do Before Rebuilding Your Product Feed

My first move would be to review the source and date of the setup advice. Then check for an automated feed method that fits your current setup before entering any more product data manually.

Based on that lesson, use this short sequence:

  1. Pause the manual build so you don’t create more work before checking the method.
  2. Identify your store platform, feed tool and the setup for which the tutorial was made.
  3. Check whether the required product data can sync from your existing catalogue.
  4. Compare the available method with platform documentation and credible setup guidance.
  5. Choose the method that fits your store, then test the feed rather than assuming automation makes it correct.

If Multifeeds matches your chosen setup, this guide can help you connect Shopify to Merchant Center with Multifeeds. Treat its interface steps as setup guidance to verify, not as permanent platform rules.

This article is based on a YouTube lesson by Robin Tesselaar of Robtronic Media and expands the lesson into a practical ecommerce Google Ads guide. The checklist and verification sequence are editorial applications of Robin’s principle. Merchant Center feed methods, apps and interface paths can change, so verify the setup shown in your current account before following them.

Verify Outdated Google Ads Advice Before You Build

The mistake I want you to avoid is investing hours in a manual workflow before checking its date, relevance and source. Review the advice first, look for an automated option that fits your current setup and only then build the Merchant Center product feed that fits your store.
