Complete your Shopify Google Ads setup in the right order: connect your store, prepare Merchant Center and link Google Ads before you build your first product-feed campaign.
Quick Answer: What Is the Minimum Shopify Google Ads Setup?
Connect your Shopify store to Google Merchant Center first, then verify and claim the website and submit your products for review. Create or access Google Ads, link it to Merchant Center and check that the products you plan to advertise are approved before building the campaign. Merchant Center is needed for product-feed campaigns, not every type of Google Ads campaign.
Shopify Google Ads Pre-Launch Checklist
| Step | Action | Ready when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center | Merchant Center receives the store’s product data |
| 2 | Verify and claim the website | Merchant Center recognizes the store website |
| 3 | Check submitted products | Products intended for advertising are approved or identified issues are resolved |
| 4 | Create the Google Ads account | The advertising account is accessible and configured |
| 5 | Link Merchant Center and Google Ads | Eligible product data is available before campaign creation |
Why Campaign Creation Comes After the Connected Foundation
The right way to start Google Ads for an ecommerce store is to build the connected Shopify, Merchant Center and Google Ads foundation before creating the campaign. These are literally the bare minimum steps for the product-based setup covered in Robin’s lesson.
Shopify holds your store and product information. Google Merchant Center receives and manages the product data used by Google’s commerce surfaces and product-feed ads. Google Ads can use eligible Merchant Center product data after the two Google accounts are linked.
That order matters because campaign settings cannot fix a disconnected feed, an unrecognized website or a product that is not eligible to appear. Starting with the right foundation gives you a prepared account structure before you make campaign and budget decisions.
Robin’s point about optimizing for profit starts with this sequence, but the setup does not optimize a campaign by itself. Linking the accounts does not guarantee approval, profitability or campaign success. It gives your first product-feed campaign the connected foundation it needs.
The mistake to avoid: do not treat campaign creation as the first step while Shopify, Merchant Center and Google Ads remain disconnected or unprepared.
Connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center First
Your first move is to connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center. This creates the route for your store to send product data to Merchant Center.
Merchant Center is not required for every type of Google Ads campaign. It is part of this setup because you want to use Shopify product data in an eligible feed-based campaign.
Use the Google channel connection options available in your Shopify account. Sign in with the Google account that should control the relevant business assets. Shopify explains how its Google and YouTube channel connects with Merchant Center and Google Ads.
Shopify and Google can change their interface labels, so follow the prompts shown in your account rather than relying on an old menu path. Keep the sequence the same: connect the store, send the product data to Merchant Center and complete the relevant checks before creating the campaign.
Verify the Website and Check Product Approval
Next, verify and claim your Shopify website in Merchant Center. This connects the store website with the correct Merchant Center account.
Then check the products you intend to advertise. Product approval is Google’s review status that determines whether a submitted product is eligible to appear. Website verification and product review are related readiness checks, but they are not the same process.
If a product has an issue, read the status shown in Merchant Center and fix the underlying product-data problem before relying on that item in a campaign. Submitted data needs to follow the relevant requirements in the Merchant Center product data specification.
Before moving on, make sure Merchant Center recognizes the website and check the status of each product you plan to advertise. A product that is under review or has an unresolved issue may not be able to serve in your planned product-feed campaign.
Create Google Ads, Link the Accounts and Run the Final Check
Once the store and Merchant Center foundation is ready, create or access your Google Ads account. Link Merchant Center to Google Ads so eligible product data can be used in feed-based campaigns.
Account linking is the connection that lets Google Ads use eligible product data from Merchant Center. It does not make every submitted product eligible automatically. Check the account link and the individual product statuses instead of assuming one confirms the other.
Before you create your very first Google Ads campaign, run through the pre-launch checklist above. Make sure product data is arriving from Shopify, the correct website is recognized, the intended products are approved and the correct Merchant Center and Google Ads accounts are linked.
Conversion measurement is a separate part of launch preparation. As a practical next step beyond the source lesson, connect Google Ads conversion tracking to Shopify before you begin spending.
After completing these checks, move on to your campaign settings, products and budget. Follow the step-by-step guide to launch your first Google Ads campaign without mixing campaign creation into the account-connection stage.
