How to Complete Your Shopify Google Ads Setup Before Launch

Complete your Shopify Google Ads setup before you create the first campaign. My recommended order is simple: connect your store, complete verification, create Google Ads, link the accounts and check measurement before spending.

Shopify Google Ads setup is the process of connecting your store’s product data and advertising accounts so you have the right foundation for launching campaigns. Don’t rush past that foundation in an attempt to start advertising sooner.

Quick Answer: What Is the Minimum Shopify Google Ads Setup?

Connect your Shopify store to Google Merchant Center first, verify the website and products, then create Google Ads and link the three accounts before building a campaign. This is the minimum launch foundation. Before spending, also configure reliable conversion measurement because account linking alone does not track results or guarantee profitable optimization.

Shopify Google Ads Pre-Launch Checklist

Follow this checklist in order. Use each completion signal to decide whether you are ready to move forward instead of creating the campaign while earlier setup work is unfinished.

  1. Connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center. The store connection is active.
  2. Verify the website and submit products. Required checks are complete and product statuses are reviewed.
  3. Create the Google Ads account. The advertising account is available.
  4. Link Shopify, Merchant Center and Google Ads. The relevant account links show as connected.
  5. Configure conversion measurement before spending. Test conversions are recorded correctly.

Connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center First

My first move would be to connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center. Google Merchant Center is the platform that receives and manages your Shopify store’s product data for Google.

This connection creates the route through which your store can submit product information. Shopify supports this setup through its Google channel, although the exact labels and screens can change. Use the Shopify Google and YouTube channel setup guide to check the connection options available in the current interface.

If Merchant Center hasn’t been created yet, follow the guide to create a Google Merchant Center account before moving on.

Verify the Store and Products Before Campaign Creation

Complete the website checks, submit your products and review their statuses before creating the first campaign. Product verification is the review process that determines whether submitted products are eligible to appear on Google.

A working connection doesn’t guarantee that every product will be approved. Your product data still needs to meet Google’s requirements, including the relevant fields and formatting described in the Merchant Center product data specification.

Review the statuses shown in your account. If a website or product check is incomplete, deal with that first instead of assuming campaign creation will solve it.

Current-interface check: Shopify and Google may change connection screens, verification prompts and account-linking paths. Check the current options in your accounts and the linked official guidance before following exact click-by-click instructions.

Create Google Ads and Link the Three Accounts

Once the store and product checks are complete, create your Google Ads account. Google Ads is the advertising platform whose account must be linked with Merchant Center before eligible Merchant Center product data can support a Shopping campaign.

Then link these three together through the relevant connections: Shopify, Merchant Center and Google Ads. Check that each required connection appears as active or connected in the current account interfaces.

The mistake I want you to avoid is creating the first campaign before this store, product and account foundation is ready. That can leave you troubleshooting basic connections when you should be reviewing the campaign itself.

These are the bare minimum steps to get started. They don’t guarantee product approval or profit, but they give you a cleaner foundation from which you can later optimize for profit.

Check Conversion Measurement Before You Spend

Account linking creates the campaign foundation, but it doesn’t configure reliable conversion measurement by itself. Before you spend, configure the conversion actions you need and test whether conversions are recorded correctly.

Connected accounts and measured results are separate parts of the setup. The relevant account links make eligible product data available for campaign use. Conversion measurement records the outcomes you want to evaluate.

Use this guide to connect Google Ads conversion tracking to Shopify. Don’t assume that an active Merchant Center or Google Ads link proves your purchase tracking is working. Test it before launching the first Shopify Google Ads campaign.

Watch Robin’s Bare-Minimum Setup Sequence

The source video explains the strict order: connect Shopify to Merchant Center, complete website and product verification, create Google Ads, link the accounts and only then create the first campaign.

The sequence is durable, but exact platform interfaces and verification requirements can change. Use the video for the strategic order and check current platform guidance for the account screens available to you.
