How to Improve Shopify Conversion Tracking Accuracy Before Launch

Your Shopify conversion tracking accuracy needs attention before you launch Google Ads, not after you start scaling. If your purchase data is incomplete or duplicated, you can make product and campaign decisions using the wrong sales picture.

Shopify conversion tracking records store purchases and sends conversion data to Google Ads for reporting and campaign optimization. My first move would be to review every Shopify purchase source, compare the available data with your store orders and decide which source should be primary.

Quick Answer: How Can You Improve Shopify Conversion Tracking Accuracy?

Review your Shopify purchase conversion sources before launching ads, then choose one verified source as primary and keep overlapping sources secondary. I recommend treating the Google and YouTube app as secondary and relying more on TrackBee based on my experience. Compare each source with Shopify orders first, because more recorded conversions do not necessarily mean more real sales.

Why Is Tracking Quality a Launch Decision?

Most people get conversion tracking terribly wrong. The risk is not limited to an untidy report. You may start judging products and changing campaigns using incomplete, duplicated or inaccurate purchase data.

You need to know where your reported sales are coming from as soon as you begin running ads. Dependable purchase data helps you identify stronger products and decide whether those products should be separated into different Google Ads campaigns.

That is why I treat tracking as part of the launch setup rather than a repair for later. Better information gives you better insights, so you can act faster in the beginning without confusing recorded conversions with actual Shopify orders.

Google explains how conversion measurement connects ad interactions with valuable customer actions in its conversion measurement guide.

Compare Shopify Purchase Tracking Sources Before Launch

Use this comparison to decide what to check first. The suggested roles reflect my recommendation in the source video, but you still need to verify both options in your own store.

Tracking source Suggested role First check
Google and YouTube app Keep secondary when a verified source is more dependable Compare its attributed purchases with Shopify orders
TrackBee Consider primary based on my experience, after verification Check current compatibility and reconcile recorded purchases with Shopify

In the source video, I estimate roughly 40% accuracy for the Google and YouTube app and roughly 90% for TrackBee based on my experience. These are observations from the lesson, not universal or independently verified benchmarks.

My recommendation is to keep the Google and YouTube app as a secondary source when you have verified a more dependable purchase source. I currently lean more heavily on TrackBee, but you should only make it primary after checking its recorded purchases against your Shopify orders.

If you need the implementation steps, follow the guide to set up TrackBee conversion tracking on Shopify. You can also review the separate Shopify Google and YouTube app tracking setup.

A tracking app does not literally enrich or modify the Google Ads pixel. It sends conversion events that can give Google Ads better data for reporting and bidding.

Current-setting check: Shopify integrations, TrackBee compatibility and observed accuracy can change. Check the current tools and settings in your account before assigning either source as primary.

How Do You Choose Primary and Secondary Purchase Actions?

Choose one verified purchase action to lead, then keep overlapping purchase sources secondary. A primary conversion can influence bidding when it is included in the campaign’s conversion goals. A secondary conversion is generally available for observation without serving as the main bidding goal.

This distinction helps you avoid treating two reports of the same order as two separate sales. Recording more conversions inside Google Ads does not prove that your Shopify store generated more orders.

Google’s explanation of primary and secondary conversion actions covers their different roles in reporting and bidding. After choosing the roles, check your Google Ads conversion settings to make sure the purchase actions are configured as intended.

Do not make the native app secondary simply because I prefer another option. Verify your own data first. The dependable source in your current setup should lead.

How Do You Verify Shopify Conversion Tracking Accuracy?

Use Shopify as your store-order record, then compare what each conversion source attributes to Google Ads. Match the same reporting period and account for reporting delays, refunds and orders from other channels. Apply these checks to existing data before launch, then repeat them as your first live orders arrive:

  1. List every Shopify purchase conversion action currently visible in Google Ads.
  2. Check which action is primary and which actions are secondary.
  3. Compare purchases attributed by each source with the corresponding Shopify orders where matching details are available.
  4. Look for missing purchases and overlapping sources reporting the same order.
  5. Keep the verified source primary and move overlapping sources to secondary.

Do not keep changing campaign structure while you are still unsure whether the purchase data is dependable. First establish which reported sales you can use. Then evaluate products and separate stronger products into different campaigns when the data supports that decision.
