Why Purchase Should Be Your Primary Google Ads Conversion

If Google treats every small action as a main goal, it may chase activity instead of revenue. Your Shopify purchase should normally be the conversion that guides bidding.

Quick Answer. Which Google Ads Conversion Should Be Primary?

For most e-commerce campaigns, Purchase should be the primary conversion used for bidding. Page View, Add to Cart and Begin Checkout can still be tracked, but they should normally be secondary. This helps Google learn from completed orders instead of softer actions that do not create revenue.

Primary vs Secondary Conversions in Google Ads

A primary conversion is used in the Conversions column and can guide automated bidding. A secondary conversion is mainly there for observation. You can still see it, but it does not need to tell Google what success looks like.

That difference matters. If Add to Cart is primary, Google may find people who often add products but rarely buy. Your dashboard can look busy while revenue stays flat.

How to Set Up the Four Main Shopify Actions

ActionNormal settingReason
Page ViewSecondaryA visit is not a sale.
Add to CartSecondaryUseful intent signal, but no revenue yet.
Begin CheckoutSecondaryThe customer can still leave.
PurchasePrimaryIt represents the order and revenue you want.

Important: Account-default goals and campaign-specific goals can change which actions a campaign uses. Check both before assuming the setup is correct.

How the Wrong Primary Goal Wastes Budget

Google’s bidding system needs a clear target. If several actions are counted as equal wins, it can optimize toward the easiest one. A page view is much easier to get than a paid order.

This can inflate the number of conversions, hide the real cost per sale and make campaign comparisons less useful. It also makes it harder to know whether your ads are creating profit.

Google Ads Conversion Settings Checklist

  1. Open Goals, then Conversions in Google Ads.
  2. Find every Page View, Add to Cart, Begin Checkout and Purchase action.
  3. Confirm that the correct Purchase action records orders and values.
  4. Set Purchase as primary for the campaigns that should drive sales.
  5. Set softer funnel actions to secondary when they are only for observation.
  6. Remove duplicate purchase actions from bidding goals.
  7. Check campaign goals and test a real order before scaling spend.

When Can a Softer Conversion Be Primary?

A lead-generation campaign may use a form submission or booked call as its main goal. A new store with very little purchase data may also test a temporary micro-conversion strategy.

But that should be a deliberate choice. For a Shopify store that can track sales, completed purchases and revenue normally give Google the clearest signal.
