If you’re dealing with an expensive Google Ads CPC, don’t assume you only have a bidding problem. Check the experience people get after clicking your ad, starting with the loading speed and usability of your ecommerce landing pages.
Cost per click, or CPC, is the amount you pay when someone clicks your ad. The audit-led point is simple: don’t accept a high CPC as unavoidable while your store still has unresolved speed or user-experience problems.
Quick Answer: Why Is Your Google Ads CPC So Expensive?
Run your ecommerce landing pages through PageSpeed Insights, then investigate slow-loading or user-experience problems before changing bids. A poor post-click experience can make paid traffic less efficient, but a red PageSpeed score does not directly set your CPC. Competition, bids, relevance and other auction factors can also make Google Ads clicks expensive.
What to Check When Google Ads CPC Looks Expensive
| What you see | Likely issue | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Landing pages load slowly | Loading performance may weaken the post-click experience | Run the page through PageSpeed Insights |
| PageSpeed shows red findings | Visitors may face performance or usability friction | Inspect each diagnostic instead of treating the score as a direct CPC cause |
| The site loads well but CPC remains high | Other auction factors may be more important | Review bids, competition and ad relevance |
| Clicks arrive but sales lag | Product-page friction may reduce advertising efficiency | Check page clarity, usability and the conversion path |
Check the Store Experience Before Changing Your Bids
Why do some people pay more? In the account discussed in the source video, a supplement brand sometimes had clicks costing as much as €3. Robin compared that with clients he referenced who commonly paid around €0.50 to €0.60 per click, mostly in Europe.
Those figures are context from one audit and Robin’s client comparison, not European CPC benchmarks. Products, markets, competitors, campaign structures and auctions can produce very different click costs.
The useful part is the direction of the diagnosis. Before treating CPC as only a campaign-settings problem, inspect the landing page experience: the usefulness, relevance and usability of the page shoppers reach after clicking.
Robin’s reasoning is that Google cares about the user experience, and advertisers should inspect it rather than sending more paid traffic into a weak store. Slow loading, unclear product information or conversion friction can make that traffic less efficient. Improving the experience can support stronger advertising economics, but it cannot guarantee a lower CPC.
How to Check Website Speed With PageSpeed Insights
Robin’s first move is to run the ecommerce website through PageSpeed Insights. This Google tool reports website-performance and user-experience diagnostics that can help you find problems affecting the post-click visit.
Start with the pages receiving paid traffic, not just your homepage. Those landing pages and product pages are what shoppers actually experience after clicking your ads.
As a practical application of Robin’s PageSpeed-first diagnosis:
- Enter a landing-page or product-page URL used by your ads.
- Check your score for website speed and read the individual findings.
- Look for loading or usability problems that could frustrate a shopper.
- Repeat the test across your main paid-traffic pages instead of assuming one result represents the whole store.
- Prioritize visible shopper friction before making another round of bid changes.
Connect the speed check to the full buying journey. If the page loads but the offer, product information or next step remains unclear, use this guide to build higher-converting product pages.
What a Red PageSpeed Result Does and Does Not Mean
Don’t keep paying for expensive clicks while ignoring red performance and user-experience findings. A red result gives you a reason to investigate what visitors may be experiencing on the page.
However, a red PageSpeed score does not directly or instantly set a higher CPC. Page speed is one part of the landing-page experience. Bids, competition, relevance and other auction factors can also affect click costs.
The reverse is also true. A green score doesn’t guarantee cheaper clicks, more sales or a higher return on ad spend. Treat the report as a diagnostic tool, not a pricing switch.
Robin’s warning: Don’t dismiss red findings just because they aren’t the only CPC factor. Inspect them, understand the shopper friction behind them and fix issues that weaken the post-click experience.
Check Other CPC Drivers Before Blaming Website Speed
If your paid landing pages load well and give shoppers a clear path forward, move outward into the campaign. Review bids, competition and ad relevance rather than repeatedly changing the website without evidence.
Keep the diagnosis ordered. Check the post-click experience first because that is Robin’s overlooked angle. If the store experience is healthy but CPC remains high, investigate the auction and campaign. If clicks arrive but sales lag, examine product-page clarity and the conversion path instead of assuming CPC is the whole problem.
Once you’ve separated the website problem from the auction problem, you can optimize Google Ads for your online store without treating every expensive click as the same issue.
Then review the Google Ads metrics that matter. CPC needs context from the rest of your advertising and store performance.
