Synchronize Shopify purchasers, verify the correct account and keep customer data separate from conversion tracking before you scale.
A Shopify Google Ads integration connects eligible first-party customer data from your store with Google Ads. That can include purchasers acquired through channels beyond Google Ads. My approach is to synchronize actual purchasers, verify the account number in both platforms and then handle conversion tracking as a separate job.
Quick Answer: Open Tools in Google Ads, select Data manager, choose Shopify Direct integration and authorize your store with its MyShopify URL. Check the Google Ads customer ID, enable Customer Match, synchronize customers who purchased at least once, then verify the same account in Shopify. Finally, add or verify the Google tag separately because customer-list synchronization does not complete conversion-event tracking.
How Do You Set Up a Shopify Google Ads Integration?
Complete the connection in two parts. First, authorize Shopify as a Google Ads data source and synchronize eligible purchasers. Second, verify the account and Google tag inside Shopify. Use this checklist to avoid stopping as soon as one platform reports that the connection is active.
Shopify Google Ads Integration Completion Checklist
| Platform | Action | Completion check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads | Authorize Shopify with the MyShopify URL | Shopify appears as a connected data source |
| Google Ads | Check the login and Google Ads customer ID | The intended account is displayed |
| Google Ads | Enable Customer Match and select purchasers | The customer list is added |
| Shopify | Open the Google and YouTube app settings | The same Google Ads account number appears |
| Shopify | Add or verify the Google tag separately | Conversion measurement settings show the intended tag |
Check the current interface before you begin. Google Ads and Shopify can change menu labels, synchronization prompts, available events and eligibility requirements. Review the options shown in your account and check the applicable Customer Match requirements rather than treating every button in this walkthrough as permanent.
What the Shopify Connection Adds to Google Ads
Connecting Shopify as a Google Ads data source lets you provide eligible customer information from your store. That can include customers acquired through Google Ads and customers who arrived through other channels, such as Meta Ads or Pinterest Ads.
That broader customer information is why I recommend selecting people who have purchased at least once. You are giving Google Ads a first-party audience signal based on actual customers rather than building this list from general store visitors.
Technical clarification
Synchronizing Shopify purchasers gives Google Ads an additional first-party audience signal. It does not literally enrich a pixel or replace conversion-event tracking. Customer Match uses eligible first-party customer data to create matched audience segments, subject to consent, eligibility, matching and applicable platform rules.
Google’s official overview explains Customer Match and eligible first-party data. Check those requirements and the notices shown in your account before enabling synchronization.
Customer Match, enhanced conversions and conversion tracking have different jobs. Customer Match creates matched audience segments. Enhanced conversions use consented, hashed first-party data to improve conversion matching. Conversion tracking records actions such as purchases, checkout starts and add-to-cart events.
Start the Direct Integration in Google Ads Data Manager
My first move is to open Google Ads and use the left-side menu to go to Tools, then Data manager. Scroll until you find Shopify and choose Direct integration.
Step 1
Open Data manager
Go to Tools, select Data manager and locate Shopify among the available data sources.
Step 2
Choose Direct integration
Open Shopify and select Authorize to begin connecting the store.
Step 3
Enter the store URL
Copy the MyShopify URL from your Shopify browser address bar, paste it into Google Ads and continue.
Use the store’s MyShopify URL, not an unrelated storefront page. The screen shown in the video has an Authorize button followed by a field for that URL, although the exact wording and location may change.
Authorize Shopify and Verify the Correct Google Ads Account
After authorization, stop and inspect the Google Ads account shown on screen. Make sure this is the right Google Ads account.
Check both the signed-in Gmail address and the displayed Google Ads customer ID. Signing in with the Gmail address associated with the intended account may help Google recognize it, but it does not guarantee that the automatic selection is correct.
Mistake: approving the account without checking its ID
A familiar account name or recognized login is not enough. Read the customer ID before completing the integration.
Fix: record the account number
Check the ID now in Google Ads and note it. You will compare it with the account number displayed later in Shopify’s Google and YouTube app.
If you are unsure which number to use, follow this guide to find and verify your Google Ads ID before you proceed.

Show Me My Path to €100K/Month →Enable Customer Match and Synchronize Shopify Purchasers
Once the account ID is correct, enable Customer Match and complete the initial connection. In the demonstrated workflow, Google Ads then prompts you to turn on enhanced conversions, move to the next screen and enable the conversion-based customer list.
Review the terms shown in your account. Agree and confirm only when your data practices meet the applicable consent and policy requirements. Not every customer record will necessarily be eligible or successfully matched.
- Turn on Customer Match and complete the initial setup.
- Enable enhanced conversions when prompted and when it fits your measurement setup.
- Turn on the conversion-based customer list, then review the terms, agree and confirm.
- Choose Audiences and continue.
- Open Shopify customer segments.
- Select the people who have purchased at least once.
- Finish the synchronization.
The source video displays an estimate of up to one minute and indicates that previous Shopify customer information can be connected. Treat that timing as an on-screen estimate, not a permanent promise. Historical data availability and successful matching depend on the records involved, account eligibility, consent and applicable platform rules.
After synchronization, the video shows another optional interface. You do not need to make an additional selection there for this task, so I recommend choosing Skip for now, then finishing with Done. Use the equivalent option if the current interface looks different.
Confirm the Connection in Google Ads and Shopify
Do not leave Data manager as soon as the setup flow finishes. Confirm that Google Ads reports a customer list added and that Shopify appears under your data connections.
Open Manage for the Shopify connection and note the connected Google Ads account information. Then return to Shopify, refresh the page and open the Google and YouTube app settings.

Customer data
Customer Match is enabled and eligible Shopify customer data is set to synchronize.
Compare the Google Ads account number inside Shopify with the customer ID you recorded in Google Ads. If the numbers do not match, pause and correct the account connection before relying on the audience or measurement setup.
Shopify’s official documentation covers connecting the Google and YouTube channel. Check the settings available in your store because the app interface can change.
The Google Ads customer ID identifies the advertising account. Your Google tag is a separate measurement identifier, so check each one in the part of the setup where it belongs.
Add or Verify the Google Tag and Configure Tracking Separately
In the demonstrated Google and YouTube app interface, open Additional conversion measurement settings, followed by Conversion Google tags. Paste or verify the Google tag you intend to use, then save the settings. Look for the equivalent conversion measurement options if your menus differ.
Customer synchronization and tracking are a little bit different. The purchaser list gives Google Ads an additional first-party audience signal. Conversion tracking records actions and sends those outcomes into Google Ads for measurement.
Do not assume the integration completes your tracking.
Connecting the Shopify data source and synchronizing purchasers does not prove that every purchase, checkout or product event is configured correctly.
The conversion event settings shown in the source video include:
- Checkout completed
- Checkout started
- Add to cart
- Page view
- Product viewed
- Payment information submitted
Those events belong to the separate conversion-measurement setup. Their availability and labels can vary, so inspect the options in your own Shopify app rather than assuming the list will always look identical.
For the remaining work, follow the dedicated tutorial to set up conversion tracking with the Google and YouTube app. Complete Google Ads conversion tracking requires this separate setup beyond the customer-data connection.

Complete the Integration Without Mixing Up the Two Jobs
The direct-connection portion of your Shopify Google Ads integration is complete when Shopify appears as a connected Google Ads data source, the correct account ID appears in both platforms and Customer Match is configured to synchronize eligible purchasers.
My first check is always the account number. After that, confirm the purchaser list and verify the Google tag and conversion events as a separate measurement job before using the data to make scaling decisions.
