Show Me My Path to €100K/Month →How Many Products for Shopify Performance Max? Start With 50 to 100
If you’re wondering how many products for Shopify Performance Max you should launch, my recommendation is 50 to 100 relevant products in one niche. That gives your first campaign a focused but broad catalog to test instead of asking Google to work with only a handful of options.
A Shopify Performance Max campaign uses Google Ads automation to serve ads across Google channels. In this launch approach, the first objective is to learn which products generate tracked sales and which consume budget without producing useful results.
Quick Answer: How Many Products Should You Launch in Shopify Performance Max?
Start with 50 to 100 relevant products in one niche before launching your first Shopify Performance Max campaign. I recommend this range because it gives the campaign more products to test, then lets you use product-level results to decide what to expand. This is a testing recommendation, not a Google requirement, and reported conversion value is not automatically true profit.
Shopify Performance Max Launch Checklist
If I had to start from absolutely zero with Google Ads, this is the order I would follow:
- Build a Shopify store in one niche. Keep the initial catalog relevant and focused.
- Add 50 to 100 relevant products. Give the campaign a broader set of products to test.
- Connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center. Send structured product data to Google.
- Complete Merchant Center approval and connect Google Ads. Prepare the catalog for campaign use.
- Launch Performance Max and review product results. Find stronger products and plan similar additions.
Follow that sequence rather than rushing into the campaign before your products are organised, submitted and ready to advertise.
Why I Start With 50 to 100 Products in One Niche
Starting with 50 to 100 products gives the campaign more relevant options to test. You aren’t assuming that every product will work. You’re creating enough choice to make the first test more informative.
The niche is just as important as the number. A larger assortment isn’t automatically better if the products are unrelated, the product data is poor or your conversion measurement is unreliable. Serve one recognisable market so the initial results can guide sensible expansion.
The mistake I want you to avoid is launching with only a very limited number of products. That leaves the campaign with fewer opportunities to identify demand and can make the test less useful.
Robin’s launch principle
Start broad within one niche, not broad across unrelated niches. You want enough relevant products to test while keeping the catalog commercially coherent.
Connect Shopify, Merchant Center and Google Ads in This Order
Once your catalog is ready, connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center. Merchant Center stores and distributes your product data for Google shopping experiences.
Your product feed is the structured product information sent from Shopify to Merchant Center. Product titles, prices, availability and other submitted fields need to follow the Merchant Center product data specification.
Complete the required Merchant Center checks, resolve relevant product issues and connect Merchant Center to your Google Ads account. You should also connect Google Ads conversion tracking to Shopify before judging campaign results.
You can then set up a PMax shopping campaign. Performance Max can access advertising inventory across Google channels, as explained in Google’s Performance Max campaign overview.
Read Product Results Without Confusing Revenue With Profit
After launch, review performance at product level. Look for products producing conversion value, products spending without recorded sales and products that haven’t yet gathered enough information for a useful decision.
Don’t assume Performance Max automatically knows your margins or true profit. Google Ads reports conversion value based on the data supplied through your measurement setup. That value is not automatically profit unless suitable profit data has been provided.
For example, two products can report the same revenue while leaving you with very different margins after product cost and advertising spend. Check your own commercial numbers before calling either product profitable.
The campaign can help reveal what is generating tracked sales and what is consuming ad spend. It can’t replace your margin calculation, and the first test doesn’t guarantee revenue or profit.
Add Products Similar to Your Strongest Sellers
Use the first campaign to decide what to add next. If a group of products produces stronger sales results, look for additions similar to the best-selling ones.
As a practical application, similarity could come from the same product category, use case or customer need. Keep each expansion tied to evidence from the initial catalog rather than adding random products just to increase the count.
Investigate products that spend without generating tracked sales. Check the offer, product page, feed information, price and measurement before deciding whether a product deserves more testing or should receive less spend.
That is how you do more of what’s working. Launch with enough relevant choice, read the product results and use those signals to shape the next version of your catalog.
